Why Your Concrete Looks Dirty — and What Actually Cleans It

Why Your Concrete Looks Dirty — and What Actually Cleans It

If your driveway, patio, or walkway looks dingy no matter how much you sweep it, you’re not imagining things. Around Montgomery, Prattville, and Millbrook, concrete takes a beating — and most of what’s making it look old isn’t going anywhere with a garden hose.

Here’s what’s actually happening, and what it takes to get that fresh, bright concrete back.

Why concrete gets dirty so fast here

Central Alabama is tough on outdoor surfaces. A few things team up against your concrete:

  • Red clay. Our soil stains everything it touches, and rain splashes it right up onto driveways and foundations.
  • Mildew and algae. Heat plus humidity is the perfect recipe for that green or black film, especially on the shady side of the house.
  • Oil and tire marks. Driveways collect drips, brake dust, and hot-tire marks that soak into the surface.
  • Pollen and organic gunk. Spring pollen and fallen leaves leave behind a layer that grinds into the pores of the concrete.

Concrete is porous, so all of that settles into the surface — not just on top of it. That’s why scrubbing barely helps.

Why a quick rinse doesn’t cut it

A regular hose pushes around 40 PSI. Surface stains that have set into concrete need far more than that, applied evenly, to lift cleanly. Go too aggressive with the wrong tip, though, and you can etch lines or leave “zebra stripes” in the concrete.

The fix isn’t just more pressure — it’s the right pressure and the right approach:

  1. Pre-treat the surface with a cleaner that breaks down mildew, algae, and grime.
  2. Surface-clean with a flat spinning attachment that covers the concrete evenly — no streaks, no lines.
  3. Spot-treat oil and rust stains that need extra attention.
  4. Rinse everything down so dirt doesn’t dry back onto the surface.

Done right, the difference is night and day — and it lasts.
